Re-Openings A Most-Welcome Turn
It’s officially—and, perhaps, finally—summer. A long with warmer temps, the new season has brought a most-welcome friend: the re-opening of many sorely missed, cultural and entertainment venues. Here in Chicago, it was mania when Wrigley Field opened to full capacity. European Cup fervor is also in full madness. Myself, I can’t wait to get back to the theater. In fact, I was supposed to see a play on the lakefront the weekend the state decided to shut everything down to check COVID. Clearly, there’s a hunger for community, period, let alone the desire to return to favorite public haunts. With that said, following are a handful of projects reflecting communal cultural zeitgeist we’ve been excluded from these past months—two of which are 2021 IESNYC Lumen Award winners.

Shape-Shifting Shed

The Shed, an extraordinary cultural space in Hudson Yards complex on the West Side of Manhattan, features a 37m telescopic shell that can extend out to create space for larger performances, as its outer shell can deploy from over the base building. The nature of the structure, however, posed a series of unusual challenges...

‘Balloon’ Lights Lift Soccer Even Higher

Retrofit the unusual area lights of the parking lot of Munich’s Allianz Arena to LED to match new fixtures which would be installed on the complex’s esplanade. The extensive stadium entrance area is lined by 16 oversized balloon lights co-created by the project’s architect Herzog & de Meuron, and Zumtobel...

Fotografiska Museum

Illuminate the interior of the museum’s restaurant, Veronika, in a manner that complements the feel of the landmarked Renaissance Revival Church Missions House, but also the award-winning illumination of its façade. Winning an Award of Excellence in the 2021 IESNYC Lumen Awards, the former church facility has been adaptively...

Grip Lock Systems

Cut the Cord with Powered Suspension

Imagine a world where a power cord didn't distract from the beauty of a light fixture. That world is possible with the Rincon Powered Suspension System from Griplock Systems. Everyone notices the power cord when it's there because it's big, ugly, and distracting. With Rincon, the only thing people will take note of is your fixture. More and more of our lighting manufacturing customers are engineering their fixtures to use Rincon, like mnima with their award-winning Noctiflor chandelier. Learn more about Rincon and contact our engineers to see how you can incorporate it into your next design.
