Inspiration or Education?
Shortly after we launched the magazine, we decided to conduct a companion conference, to “talk it out,” if you will, as to whether the technical learning curve of LED was worth the potential wonder it could deliver. Fortunately, the days of having to understand heat sinks, or the percentage a driver should be driven at, are gone—or are they? Over the past couple of years, the magazine has drifted to the side of inspiration, opposed to heavy technical education. But the thing about solid state lighting is that it keeps evolving. On the one hand, manufacturers, partly, by embracing integrated luminaire lighting controls, have made the control aspect of specification easier. But it never stops. LiFi, for example, is materializing more than just “vaporware”—or is it? Indeed, it begs the question as to whether it is the next best thing, or people are better off with radio-based WiFi. It may be moot, as, like cell phone numbers, there may simply not be enough RF band available in the near future. Clearly, there’s an onus on the publication not to completely forget our more technical past, and certainly, not be afraid to shine a light on contentious issues, or “bugs” that still need tweaking. Stay tuned. In the meantime, following are a couple case studies looking at LiFi and “wellness” lighting.
